President’s Message

Dear Fellow Members:
After stepping up to the plate (i.e. Chapter President) in the wake of illness, I would like to thank everyone that has helped with the transition. The support from past and current officers has been tremendous. Thank you.
Our meeting on Oct 7th at APD was filled with very exciting and new GYN information and procedures. The sales reps brought their equipment which allowed some useful hands-on experience.  We women now have a way to stop uterine bleeding and be sterile without undergoing major surgery under general anesthesia… not even a band aid is needed!  That's progress! The Q&A period lasted longer then one of the talks, and I think even appointments were made (kidding)!

I am looking forward to the rest of our programs/meetings on topics of great interest.

AORN Congress is coming up in March in Orlando , FL. We are looking for 4 delegates to represent Chapter 3001. This year delegates that register before Feb 6th will receive $150.00 from headquarters. The money must be applied for and will be directly deposited to the Chapter funds and distributed from our Treasurer. Please plan early and let the board know that you are interested in being a delegate for the chapter.

 Respectfully,

       Roanne

OB/GYN: IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT BABIES ANYMORE!

On Saturday October 7th we had the opportunity to listen to two fascinating presentations on women’s health issues.  Dr Susan Shipman discussed various methods of birth control, leading up to the featured topic of hysteroscopic sterilization utilizing Essure, the transcervical method of female sterilization.  Essure sales rep Valerie Balga was there to demonstrate the actual equipment used for the procedure.  Dr Shipman’s talk was followed by an equally interesting update by Dr Kathy Varga on managing menorrhagia.  She explained the causes of menorrhagia and discussed in detail the use of Novasure, which obliterates the uterine lining and takes just 90 seconds! Sales rep for Novasure Sue Lavoie was on hand with the company product.  Both talks were informative and left us assured that there are so many more options available now for birth control and menorrhagia.

There were 14 participants.

Many thanks to Roanne Rogerson for organizing this event as well as to Dr Shipman, Dr Varga, Valerie Balga and Sue Lavoie.

More than 6,800 perioperative professionals attended the 53rd AORN Congress and the 2007 Congress in Orlando promises to deliver the same exciting education, networking, and entertainment in a city perfect for the young and the young at heart.

Attend the 54th AORN Congress to revitalize your passion for nursing and expand your perioperative skills. Outstanding education and events will help you make valuable connections with your perioperative colleagues and industry partners to advance your career.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CHAPTER BUSINESS MEETING 10/7/06

Ø      7 members were present

Ø      Chapter 3001 will seat 4 delegates to AORN Congress in March; headquarters will send $150 to the chapter for each delegate registered by February 9.  We will select delegates in January.

Ø      CEU’s are an important feature of each educational session.  The process takes several months to complete, therefore it is imperative for those planning an educational session to get the process moving in a timely manner.  Providing only contact hours may be a deterrent to traveling nurses to attend the session, as well as others seeking to renew their certification.

Ø      Calendar of meetings and events was discussed

Ø      The treasurer’s report indicated we collected $140 today in fees for the conference.  Discussion on ideas for assisting our chapter membership with financial backing to attend conferences, take the CNOR exam for the first time, provide scholarships for pursuing Perioperative nursing, and attending Congress.

Ø      Perioperative Nurse’s Week is November 12-18; DHMC is planning an open house event.

Ø       Phyllis Barrell has agreed to assume the vacant president-elect seat.

Ø      Emailing of the chapter newsletter and educational flyers is an economic success; less than 10 September newsletters had to be snail-mailed.

Ø      Specialty assembly membership is now a component of our AORN membership.  Discussion on where to find information about the assemblies was discussed and is published in this newsletter.

Ø       PBS has a 4 part series exploring the quality of health care in the United States .  The series is called “Remaking American Medicine” and is airing in October; check your local listings.

Ø       Lanette Baker was the lucky winner of the 50/50 drawing.  She collected $11 and the remaining sum went to our Chapter treasury.  Congratulations Lanette!
