"BRING
A FRIEND CAMPAIGN"
We are hoping for a large turnout for all
of our programs
this year. With special emphasis on
membership this year, we
are
sponsoring a drawing for a $20 dinner gift
certificate
at
a restaurant of your choice. All you need
to do is bring
non-AORN
members to the programs and your name will
be
entered into
the drawing for each guest that you
bring.
There will be one
drawing per program, so get as many
invitations out
as you can.
NOTE
FROM OUR PRESIDENT
"The
Correct Word"
I would like to raise people's awareness of their use of the
word "right" to mean
"correct". In nursing school, we learn the
"right"patient, the
"right" drug, the "right"dose, etc. and what
we really mean is the
"correct" patient, the "correct" drug, the
"correct" dose, etc.
With the arrival of the mandated "Correct Surgery
Policies"
that is being instituted in all
of our facilities, we need to look at how
we recognize the correct
patient, the correct surgery and the
correct site of surgery. It can
no longer be that we are doing
surgery on the right leg, when
we mean we are doing surgery on
the correct leg, meaning the
left leg.
We must be precise with our words. If it is important to have
a policy about correct surgery,
then we must use the proper
terminology along with it.
Otherwise confusion, misunderstandings
and potential for harm exists.
The use of the word "right" must be used to
designate
laterality only. So, we must
learn to change. We must help our
colleagues to do the same.
Eva
Daniels, president
